Teaching Aids

Teaching English language learners (ELL) can sometimes be a difficult task. Students need to be able to practice new strategies and using the information they have learned in order to retain it. This blog will give you some ideas on teaching new vocabulary to ELL students and how to integrate technology while you're at it.

1. New vocabulary is very important to an ELL student. It will help them communicate better with others and comprehend what they are reading. One good way to have students practice the new vocabulary they have learned is found on web site http://www.studystack.com/menu-17612. This site gives students the opportunity to study by themselves or with a partner during Learning Centers time. It reinforces nouns by providing the Spanish word.

2. Another way to integrate the vocabulary that students have learned is by creating a PowerPoint. That's right! A class as a whole can create the PowerPoint. You can do this daily or weekly. Students choose a word that they have learned and add a new page to the PowerPoint with that word. Choose a student to type in the word, its definition, and what it means to them. This will give them the proper definition as well as a connection. Each day (or week) is a different word. You can view the slide show and review the words (with a projector) each time you go to add another word.

3. Learning Centers are a great way for a child to practice their new knowledge in a safe environment. They can easily make mistakes and correct them without feeling like they have failed. Computer games and practices are a wonderful way to practice skills during Centers time. The following are a couple of web sites geared toward independent practice or partner practice for students.

There are many more ideas out there. These are just a few that I use in my classroom on a regular basis. More to come soon!
